For you manga fans reading this, go out and pick up Sexy Voice and Robo as soon as you see on the shelves or online. It's two volumes in one, in an A4 size, with flaps, and it has such a great story that really works with the short format. It features a 14 year old dating service operator code-named Sexy Voice who has a unique skill to determine a person's personality and other traits just by hearing their voice. One day she runs into a yakuza boss who she ends up unofficially becoming his private investigator, learning about her dreams to become a spy . . . or a fortune-teller. She picks up a sidekick that she names Robo, a lonely, older robot otaku just looking for a girlfriend, who unwillingly gets dragged along on her investigations.
In the beginning, each chapter features a case that Sexy Voice must solve for her mob boss. Each case though offers a little something that carries over into the next, leading up into a larger story in which Sexy Voice must realize some of the harsh truths behind her dreams. It's really a story about a girl entering the adult world, and actually can be a little sad as well as filled with a little hope.
The artwork is also all brush stroke, giving the Tokyo a European feel mixed in with an older Japan, which is different compared to the hard-edge, techo-sized Japan we see in most manga. It just feels really natural.
It's a seinen title that I really hope does well. Typing my review for AoD this weekend, but just wanted to give a heads up to you all. Titles like this NEED to do well in the English market.
